“Embarking on a Journey after the Rain” – College Assemblies of United College, 2022-2023 Term 2 (Part I)

Nine face-to-face college assemblies were held with the theme of “Embarking on a Journey after the Rain” in Term 2 of 2022-2023. Let’s recap the first and second college assemblies!

【United College x HKUST Cantonese Debate Match

United College Cantonese Debate Team has invited the Cantonese Debate Team of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (UST) for a friendly debate match at the College Assembly on 20 January 2023. The debate topic was ‘’Should music awards be determined by public voting or professional adjudication’’. The College Team supported the “public voting”, whereas the UST Team supported “professional adjudication”.

After a heated debate, the College Team won the match by 2 to 1. Mr Ho Sin Him Marco (COMM/4), member of the College Team, was awarded ‘’The Best Debater’’. Ms Jedidiah Tam, member of the UST Team, was awarded “My Favourite Debater”. Our warmest congratulations to the College Cantonese Debate Team and awarded debaters!

The College team won the match by 2 to 1.

Special thanks were given to the panel of judges – Dr Chan Man Ho, Associate Professor of Department of Science and Environmental Studies, The Education University of Hong Kong, Dr Benson T B Tong, Assistant Professor of School of Arts and Social Sciences, Hong Kong Metropolitan University, and Dr Ng Ka Yi, Lecturer of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

As the Lunar New Year was approaching, the College Student Wellness Programme distributed 2-sided Fai Chun,designed by College student, Ruby Lee (ENGE/2, to students attending the college assembly. Wishing all a happy and fruitful year of the Rabbit!

 


 

Sharing by HK Sports Team Members & UC Student Union Elections 2023

The second College Assembly was held on 3 February 2023 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, with over 1,300 participants. Professor Martin C S Wong, Associate College Head and Dean of Students shared with students the College’s recent activities – “Experiential Workshop for the Deaf Culture and Sign Language” and “Language Improvement Project 2022-23 – Spring Programmes” during the College Time session, and encouraged students to apply for the programmes.

The College then invited two College students who are currently serving as Hong Kong Team athletes to share their sports journey and experiences in competitions. They were Mr Lam Yin Chun (PESH/ 4), a member of Hong Kong Men’s Volleyball Team, Hong Kong Men’s Volleyball Adult Team, Green Dragon Volleyball Club Team, and CUHK Men’s Volleyball Team; and Ms Wong Cheuk Ning (PESH/4), a member of Hong Kong Athletic Team, Hong Kong long-distance runner, a member of CUHK Athletics Team, and the captain of CUHK Cross Country Team. Ms Wong won the first place in both Hong Kong 10K Championships and The 25th  Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon recently.

At the end of the college assembly, the Election Committee of the United College Student Union Council introduced the Student Union Elections 2023 to fellow students. A voting counter was arranged outside the hall after the assembly to encourage students to cast their votes.
