Professor Stephen H S Wong graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education from The University of Liverpool in 1987. He obtained his MSc in Sports Science in 1989 and his PhD in Exercise Physiology in 1996 from Loughborough University as a Commonwealth Scholar. Professor Wong joined CUHK immediately after receiving his PhD and is currently Professor of Department of Sports Science and Physical Education. He also serves as Director of Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research, CUHK. A highly committed educator and researcher, Professor Wong was awarded the CUHK Research Excellence Award in 2010, and was also appointed as the VC Outstanding Fellow of the Faculty of Education between 2014 and 2019. Professor Wong is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Hong Kong Association of Sports Medicine & Sports Science. He has actively served the research and educational communities in Hong Kong and overseas. 

Professor Wong’s research focuses on physical activity and sedentary behaviour, and the nutritional and metabolic aspects of exercise. He has published extensively in the leading journals of his field. Professor Wong is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Exercise Science & Fitness and an editorial board member of numerous international journals. He has considerable experience in the education sector, serving as a supervisor and member of management committees of colleges and international schools.

Professor Wong is a specialist in Family Medicine, Honorary Consultant of the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care in the New Territories East Cluster of Hospital Authority, and a researcher in the field of cancer screening and prevention of chronic diseases. He has over 300 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, and has received over 10 international and local research awards for his studies. He is currently Professor of the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, Faculty of Medicine and Professor by courtesy of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is the Chairman of the Association of the Pacific Rim Universities, NCD stream; Co-Chairman of the Grant Review Board, Health and Medical Research Fund, Food and Health Bureau; Convener of the Advisory Group on Hong Kong Reference Framework in Primary Care Settings; a member of the Expert Advisory Panel in Implementation Science of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and a former member of the Research Council of the Food and Health Bureau.

Professor Lee Hung Kay is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, an Associate Director of the Environmental Science Programme, and the Director of MSc Programme in Accreditation Chemistry. He is a Trustee and Fellow of the college. He is serving the College as Dean of General Education. Professor Lee actively participates in various professional organisations and committees. He is the Honorary Secretary of the Royal Society of Chemistry (Hong Kong Section) and the Vice President of the Hong Kong Chemical Society. Besides, he is a member of the Chemical Safety and Health Advisory Committee of the Occupational Safety and Health Council.


Professor Tang Sze Wing

Professor Tang Sze Wing is Professor and Chair of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and concurrently serving as Associate Head of United College, Director of the T T Ng Chinese Language Research Centre of the Institute of Chinese Studies, and Director of the Research Centre for Chinese Language and Linguistics of the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute. He received his BA and MPhil from CUHK and PhD from the University of California, Irvine. His research interests lie primarily in Chinese syntax, theoretical approaches to the study of Chinese dialects, and comparative grammar.

“The Chinese University of Hong Kong has a total number of nine college today, while in 1956 United College was founded through the amalgamation of five colleges. From the past to present, the spirit of being united and diversified is part of us in bringing the whole-person education to our students.

That’s why students from different disciplines can not only enjoying a beautiful campus while acquiring professional knowledge in different academic areas, but they can also experience UC’s Non formal education together with students from different backgrounds. From social service to social innovation and experiential learning project, or from mentorship program to career related activities, plus our talk series and different large to smaller scaled student activities, UC brings a wide range of experience and education to our students. No matter you are into activities for aesthetic development, environmental protection, sports or more. These are rooted to the belief that UC is a college that places strong emphasis on whole-person education.

Dr LEUNG Tak Wah

Dr Leung Tak Wah is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has received multiple teaching awards from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and the Faculty of Arts. He is also the winner of the 2014 Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award. Dr. Leung is highly familiar with the General Education Programme of our college, having been hosting the “Senior Seminar” (GEUC 4011) and assisting the teaching of the course “University Life and Learning” (GEUC 1011) for many years. 

“There will be more Service-Learning opportunities in the United College General Education Programme. We aim to further achieve holistic education by integrating our General Education courses with community service activities, which will allow our students to enjoy a more diverse learning experience outside of the classroom. We hope that our students will be able put what they have learnt in our programme into practice, using their skills and knowledge to help those in need in our society.  We also hope that our students can broaden their own horizons while assisting others, living up to the Confucian spirit ‘to establish for others as one would for oneself, and to help others realize themselves as one would for oneself.’ ”

Dr Tony Chan was appointed as College Secretary of United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2020. Dr Chan is a passionate educator with over 20 years of NGO, education administration and student development experience in Hong Kong. With a vision to walk with and stand by students, he is keen on connecting different universities, NGOs and partners all over the world to provide opportunities for students to develop their character and values.
