【2025 UCGOAL】Living the Language: Walking into the Heart of Spanish in Barcelona

As they wound through the narrow, cobbled streets of Barcelona’s Gothic District, 15 UC students found themselves immersed in the city’s historic core. The quarter, home to the oldest parts of Barcelona, preserves remnants of the Roman wall and medieval landmarks that speak to centuries of history.
From 31 May to 15 June, the students took part in the College’s Spanish Culture and Language Programme, attending an intensive Spanish course organised by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
One of the most memorable highlights was the dedication of a Spanish teacher who not only memorised every student’s name but also learnt to pronounce them in Cantonese, embracing each student’s cultural background with heartfelt respect. Her commitment extended beyond the classroom, as she organised an outdoor activity where students practiced ordering in Spanish at a local café, blending academic learning with real-life interaction.

Students were also given the opportunity to live with local host families, offering a firsthand glimpse into Spanish customs, daily routines, and culinary traditions, experiences no textbook could replicate.

Beyond the Gothic District, students explored Passeig de Gràcia, one of Barcelona’s most iconic boulevards, renowned for its Catalan modernist architecture. The tour showcased the city’s artistic evolution and the bold creativity of the early 20th century, contrasting to the medieval charm of the Gothic District.

The presence of our Honorary Advisor, Dr Vicente Rasoamalala, further enriched the Programme. Her thoughtful guidance and active participation, including sharing local cuisine with the students, added warmth to the experience.

“This programme isn’t just about learning Spanish, it’s about living like a Spaniard,” one of the UC students shared, reflecting on the immersive experience in Barcelona.
