【2025 UCGOAL】Lyon Unfolded: In Dialogue with French Culture

Seated in the welcoming homes of Lyonnais families, UC students experienced a moment of conviviality, as the dining room transformed into a space for cultural exchange. Over traditional dishes and friendly conversation, hesitant phrases soon gave way to confident dialogue, as they discovered that language, rather than a barrier, becomes a bridge connecting people across cultures.
This meaningful experience was part of the College’s French Culture and Language Programme in Lyon, France—a three-week journey in which 20 UC students engaged in a blend of structured learning and immersive cultural experiences this summer.

Each morning began with engaging French lessons, where students strengthened their conversational skills and expanded their vocabulary. But the learning didn’t stop at the classroom door—Lyon itself became a living textbook, with every outing designed to reinforce language acquisition through real-world practice. One of the highlights was a visit to Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, the city’s renowned indoor market. There, students practiced ordering food in French, from fresh pastries to regional cheeses, with each interaction providing a lively and authentic opportunity to apply what they had learned.
The group also enjoyed a scenic ride on Lyon’s iconic funicular, ascending to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. From its hilltop perch, panoramic views of the city unfolded, offering not only breathtaking scenery but also a deeper appreciation of Lyon’s rich history and architectural elegance.

A peaceful cruise along the Saône River showcased a different view of Lyon, gliding past historic bridges, lively quays, and riverside landmarks. As the boat gently moved through the water, students attuned themselves to the city’s rhythm, enjoying a moment of serenity and leisure.
