United College Toastmasters Club – A fruitful Annual Conference in Zhongshan
The new cabinet of 21st Session Executive Committee of UCTMC was formed in April 2025 under the leadership of President, Mr Alan H K Lam Ho (ELED/1). Representing UCTMC, Alan and Mr Alonso S C Ng (BIOL/3) attended the Toastmasters International Zhongshan Conference 2025 during 16 to 18 May 2025. They seized the opportunities to strengthen connections with Toastmasters International to facilitate club operations.
“On 16-18 May 2025, Alonso and I, representing UCTMC, went to Zhongshan to participate in the Toastmasters District 89 Conference 2025. We learnt a lot of public speaking skills and chatted with the other Toastmasters friends not only from other university clubs but also those from corporate clubs.
By watching the contests, we saw very creative speakers on stage. One speaker, Mr Edward Teh, who turned out to be the District 89 Champion in the International Speech Contest held in the Conference, used his tremendous acting skills to demonstrate the different forms of absurd discrimination that are somehow still normalised even in today’s day and age.
We are also particularly interested in some workshops/keynote speeches. For example, Mr Darren Tay, the World Champion of Public Speaking, taught us how to persuade others. We also attended Mr Kevin Goh’s workshop, which allowed us to observe the interactive teaching method that demonstrates the essence of vocal variety. It was a truly enriching experience that provided us with new insights about public speaking techniques. “
