【2025 UCGOAL】From City to Countryside: A Slow Living Journey of Three United College Students

From 2 to 16 June, three UC students embarked on a transformative service-learning journey to Nanao Shumei Natural Farm in Yilan, Taiwan, under the College GOAL programme. Through this immersive experience, they explored natural farming practices and embraced the rhythms of rural living.

During their stay, they engaged in a variety of hands-on activities such as weeding, transplanting corps, cleaning the guesthouse, and even operating a digger – tasks that offered a rare opportunity to engage with agricultural work. Although the work was physically demanding, the students supported and encouraged one another, gradually adapting and finding fulfillment in the process.

Beyond farm work, they also interacted with local students to exchange learning experiences, welcomed tourist groups by introducing the farm’s history and enjoyed leisure activities such as visiting Jinyue Falls and picnicking.  These moments allowed them to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and the warmth of local hospitality.

Throughout the trip, the students not only reconnected with the nature and learned to cherish it but also reflected deeply on the fast-paced and stressful lifestyle of the city. They expressed a desire to carry the renewed mindset of “living in the moment” back into their everyday lives.

Achievement Unlocked – “Farm Digger Operator!”

Summer in Nanao was truly hot. While working on the farm, the students took short breaks to rest—because resting is the key to going further on the journey of farming.

This meaningful exchange pushed them beyond their comfort zones and inspired new perspectives on life, making it a truly unforgettable chapter in their personal growth journey.
