【2026 UCGOAL】Learning, Exploration, Warmth, and Memories: Discovering Barcelona through Language and Culture
‘The time I spent in Barcelona was filled with learning, exploration, warmth, and wonderful memories.’
These words, written by one of the participants, aptly capture the experience of the 15 students who joined in the UC Spanish Culture and Language Programme in Barcelona from 30 May to 13 June 2026. Hosted by Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), the two-week programme offered far more than language instruction. It was an immersive journey that blended academic learning with cultural exploration, personal growth, and meaningful connections.
Through dynamic and interactive classes, students built a solid foundation in Spanish while gaining the confidence to communicate in real-life situations. Learning soon extended beyond the campus as students practiced their language skills in local cafés, markets, and restaurants, discovering that language is not merely a subject to be studied, but a gateway to understanding the people, culture and character of a place.
Friendships beyond borders, students enjoyed gathering with classmates from different countries, creating meaningful intercultural connections and lasting friendships.
Beyond the classroom, Barcelona unfolded as a living textbook of history, art, and architecture. Through guided tours, students wandered through the winding cobbled streets of the Gothic Quarter and discovered the treasures of Catalan Modernist landmarks that revealed the many layers of the city’s identity. Walking through medieval streets, admiring architectural masterpieces, and experiencing the city’s vibrant atmosphere allowed students to engage with Barcelona not as tourists, but as active learners immersed in its cultural landscape.
Through guided tours of Barcelona’s iconic landmarks, students gained deeper insights into the city’s rich history, culture, and architectural heritage.
Another valuable component of the programme was the homestay experience. Living with local host families provided students with an authentic glimpse into Spanish and Catalan life. From enjoying traditional home-cooked meals to engaging in conversations about local culture, history, and everyday customs. These moments of exchange fostered friendships, deepened cultural understanding, and often became the most cherished memories of the programme.

The presence of our Honorary Advisor, Dr Vicente Rasoamalala, further enriched the programme. In addition to sharing local cuisine and cultural experiences with students, she led a visit to Girona, a beautifully preserved medieval city near Barcelona, offering participants a glimpse into another facet of Catalonia’s rich historical and cultural heritage.
A day trip to Girona with Honorary Advisor Dr Vicente Rasoamalala offered students a unique opportunity to experience another facet of Catalonia’s rich history and culture.
As the programme concluded, students returned home with far more than basic Spanish proficiency. They brought back cherished friendships, greater self-confidence, stronger independence, and a deeper understanding of the world beyond their own communities. Most importantly, they discovered that some of the most meaningful learning takes place through the people they meet, the cultures they experience, and the connections they build along the way.
