【2026 UCGOAL X LIP】 Culture and English Language Programme at the University of York, UK

From 4 to 27 June 2026, 13 College students participated in a three-week Culture and English Language Programme at the University of York, UK. Jointly organised by the UC Globe-oriented Active Learning (GOAL) Programme and the Language Improvement Project (LIP), the programme was led by Ms Shirley T S Lam, Co-convenor of the Language Improvement Project.

Throughout the programme, students were fully immersed in an English-speaking environment, engaging daily with instructors and peers. This experience significantly enhanced their communication skills, particularly in spoken English, and helped build confidence in using the language in real-life situations.

Learning extended beyond the classroom through a range of enriching cultural activities. Students explored the historic city of York through guided tours, visited the York Castle Museum, and joined an excursion to Whitby. These experiences enabled them to develop a deeper appreciation of British history and culture while applying their language skills in authentic contexts.

Students also stayed with local host families, allowing them to experience everyday British life first-hand and practice English in a natural and supportive environment.

Overall, the programme provided a rewarding and memorable experience, equipping students with enhanced language abilities and broader cultural perspectives.

The College extends its sincere gratitude to Ms Shirley T S Lam for her dedication and guidance in making the programme a meaningful journey for all participants.
