Annual Workshop 2026 — Europe’s Growth Champion: Poland’s Path from Poverty to Prosperity

Since its debut in 1980, the Annual Workshop of the College has evolved into a long‑standing tradition. Each year, the College selects a compelling topic, inviting leading experts of the respective professions to share insights and engage in discussions with the audience.

This year’s workshop, themed Europe’s Growth Champion: Poland’s Path from Poverty to Prosperity, was held at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall on 20 March 2026. The College was honoured to welcome two distinguished speakers who shared their expertise with students and attendees. Diverging from the previous practice of inviting multiple professionals, this year’s workshop was led by two eminent figures: Mr Michał Kołodziejski, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Hong Kong, and Professor Marcin Piątkowski, Professor of Economics at Kozminski University in Poland and Senior Economist at the World Bank. Together, they guided students to explore the rapid economic growth of the Republic of Poland in recent years.

Professor Lee Hung Kay, Associate Head and Dean of General Education, delivered a welcome and opening remarks, launching the event to uncover the secrets behind Poland’s success.

The first speaker, Mr Michał Kołodziejski, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Hong Kong, gave a brief overview of the Republic of Poland, introducing its current situation, notable landmarks, and culture to an audience of approximately 1,400 students and attendees.

Following Mr Kołodziejski, Professor Marcin Piątkowski took the stage and delivered a captivating presentation. He elaborated on various aspects ranging from Poland’s geographical location, history, and traditional culture to the reasons behind its determination to reform and advance economic development, while deconstructing the success factors of the Polish growth model.

After the impressive presentations, Professor Piątkowski and Mr Kołodziejski, who highly value interaction with students, stepped off the stage to invite open floor questions and led a lively discussion with the audience at close range.
