From Stage to Strength: United College Toastmasters Shine
The United College Toastmasters Club (UCTMC), under the leadership of its 21st Executive Committee, enjoyed a vibrant and successful term from September to December 2025.
During this period, the Committee set up a promotion booth at the United College Art Fair on 1 September to engage United College students and help them learn more about UCTMC. They also organised a demonstration meeting along with five regular sessions, all held on alternate Thursdays at 6:45 pm in Room 312 of the Tsang Shiu Tim Building. These gatherings provided members with consistent opportunities to practice and refine their public speaking skills. This year was particularly remarkable, as the Club achieved a record-breaking milestone by welcoming 35 new members—the highest registration in the past five years.

A highlight of the term was the Inauguration Ceremony on 2 October 2025, which marked the official beginning of the Committee’s journey. The event was graced by Professor Tse Chi Shing, Associate Dean of Students, whose inspiring speech offered encouragement and support to the new leaders. The ceremony was further honoured by the presence of Professor Lee Hung Kay, Associate Head; Ms Dorothy Chu, College Secretary; and Ms Shirley Lam of the English Language Teaching Unit, whose participation added prestige and warmth to the occasion.

To elevate the speaking and leadership experience of its members, the Club invited seasoned Toastmasters to deliver demonstration speeches, to give public speaking workshop, and provide general evaluations during meetings. Their expertise, combined with the constructive feedback offered by language evaluators from the English Language Teaching Unit, significantly enriched the learning environment. Members not only gained confidence in their communication abilities but also developed a deeper appreciation for the art of public speaking.

Members actively engaged in the workshop during regular meeting.
Members not only gained valuable learning experiences through meetings and workshops but also built meaningful connections. Here are some reflections from our members, capturing their growth and achievements.

“As the Vice President of Education, I am truly proud to see that our efforts have successfully attracted so many new members. This day marked the night snack gathering after our first official meeting. I was thrilled to have these new active members join us in casual chitchats.”
– Chan Ka Ying, Emma (ELED/2)

“Our committee proudly hosted UCTMC’s first-ever Christmas and year-end gathering to conclude the inaugural term. The event featured lively activities including board games, karaoke, and card games, followed by a delightful hotpot dinner. The celebration culminated with the cutting of a festive cake and a heartfelt sharing session among members. Throughout the evening, participants enjoyed joyful moments, delicious food, and meaningful conversations that deepened our sense of connection and belonging.”
– Ng Sam Chit, Alonso (BIOL/4)

“The UCTMC experience has been both enjoyable and rewarding. We, along with other Toastmasters Clubs in Area H2, participated in an exciting joint event held in October. It began with a Tall Tales Contest. Afterwards, we enjoyed activities such as karaoke singing, table tennis, tennis, and various board games! Also, we have always been delighted to gain valuable insights from public speaking and communication experts who have come to deliver high‑quality workshops! “
– Lam Ho Ka, Alan (ELED/2)
