Graduation = “Workplace Salves”? Career Development Facilitation Scheme 2025

In recent years, graduates often call themselves as “Workplace Salves”. Is work too stressful, or have their dreams drifted far from their careers?

The Career Development Facilitation Scheme, held from February to May 2025, organised a series of events to explore the relations between dreams and career paths with our students. Highlights included 1-on-1 Career Coaching, Career Talk, and the Personality Dimension Workshop.

Once again, the College co-organised the programme with the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, CUHK (CUSCS). According to students’ majors and their interested industries, each student was paired with a well-trained Career Facilitator. The College encourages students to plan their career and discover their strengths in an earlier stage.

The Importance of Self-reflection – Kick-off Ceremony cum Briefing Session

Dr Vaughan K T Mak, Associate Director & Head of Academic Programmes – PCE, CUSCS, and Dr Tony M H Chan, College Secretary, participated the Kick-off Ceremony cum Briefing Session on 11 February 2025. They introduced the role of Career Facilitators and the purposes of the scheme, inspiring students to actively chart their future paths.

Dr Mak mentioned that many students enter the workplace without deep self-reflection. Therefore, unlike traditional mentors in specific industry, the Career Facilitators in this scheme will use various tools to help students understanding their values, dreams, and limitations. While learning about different industries, facilitators also help students match their skills to ideal careers, fostering reflection on a wide range of career possibilities.

“I Love My Job!” – Career Talk

For the Career Talk on 18 February, the College was grateful to invite Mr Chau Yan Ting as our speaker, and Mr Jayden Y Y Lam, College alumnus, to host the talk with the topic “I Love My Job!”. Beside sharing the passion for their work, they also discussed the attitudes that students should have before entering the workplace.

During the talk, a student’s question sparked thoughtful exchange. Having retaken public examinations and enrolled in a nursing programme, the student expressed uncertainty about pursuing a career in the field. Mr Lam praised the student, noting that the willingness to acknowledge our own issues is already a commendable social skill. Mr Chau believed that we will always feel uncertain, whether in work or life. It is important to stay adaptable, focusing on the present while embracing our possibility to change.

Mr Chau Yan Ting, known as “Brother YT”, began giving free talks at primary and secondary schools across the 18 districts last year to share his experiences about becoming a singer.

Mr Jayden Y Y Lam, College alumnus, also participated in the production of YouTube channels and magazines beyond tutoring.

Personality Dimensions Workshop x Mill Milk

On 25 March 2025, the College also hosted a Personality Dimensions Workshop, featuring with two members of the local creative media channel Mill Milk, Long and Tony. They joined students in diving into different personality dimensions and experiencing various workplace scenarios.

The students were grouped based on their personality types, with reference to their Personality Dimensions test results completed prior to the workshop. Through group interactions, students discovered the limitations of various personalities. The two guests from Mill Milk also shared their experiences in the creative media industry. They also reminded students to be well-prepared and reflect deeply on their passions before interviews, ensuring they pursue roles they truly love rather than settling for jobs just to ace the process.
