Professor Lee Hon Ching, Art Advisor of United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, passed away on 19 September 2025 at the age of 87. We are deeply saddened by his passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.
Since 2006, Professor Lee served as the Art Advisor of United College, making significant contributions to the development of arts and culture within the College. Through the “Hop Wai Arts and Cultural Development Fund”, Professor Lee actively supported the “Hop Wai Art and Cultural Programme” jointly organised by United College, Chung Chi College and Wu Yee Sun College. The programme hosted annual exhibitions of renowned artists’ works on campus and organised art workshops for staff and students, greatly enriching the cultural life both within and beyond the University.
Professor Lee also established Hop Wai Tong, through which he generously donated millions of dollars to the College over the years, enabling the long-term development of arts and cultural projects at the College. In recognition of his artistic achievements and unwavering support for various University initiatives, Professor Lee was conferred the title of Honorary Fellow by The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012.
Starting from July 2024, the College launched the Hop Wai Artist-in-Residence Programme funded by Professor Lee’s donation. Under this programme, an artist is appointed annually to reside at the College, providing students with valuable opportunities to engage with artistic works. As part of the general education, the programme aims to inspire students’ interest in and appreciation of arts and culture.
