Promote Diversity & Inclusion: UC Supported “The Way We Talk” Film Screening & Conversation

To promote a culture of diversity and inclusion on campus, the University Diversity and Inclusion Office organised a “The Way We Talk” Film Screening and Conversation on 24 March 2025. The College actively supported by listing the event as one of the College Assemblies, encouraging students to participate and gain a deeper understanding of the daily lives and challenges faced by the deaf community.

On the day of the event, representatives from the United College Student Union, Mainland Student Association, and United Club were presented to assist, showcasing the College’s commitment to respect and multiculturalism. Professor Stephen H S Wong, College Head, also attended as the guest of honour, adding prestige to the event.

Professor Stephen H S Wong, College Head (3rd right); Professor Lee Hung Kay, Associate Head (4th left); Dr John H W Lai, Chairperson of the College Committee on Inclusive Excellence (far right), along with student representatives from the United College Student Union, Mainland Student Association, and United Club, were presented to show their support for the event.

This event used delicate visual storytelling and post-screening conversation to immerse the audience in the experiences of the deaf community. By sharing the daily challenges of dead individuals, the event enhanced public awareness and understanding of the deaf community, fostering a more inclusive and friendly social environment. The post-screening conversation also featured the film’s director, Mr Wong Sau Ping, along with the two lead actors, Miss Chung Suet Ying and Mr Ng Tsz Ho, who engaged in an open discussion with the audience about their filming experiences and answered questions from the attendees on the spot.

United College is dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusion. We will continue to support initiatives that promote these values, striving to create an equitable campus culture for all.
