Serenity Among the Hills — Forest Therapy at Tsz Shan Monastery

The moist, earthy scent of moss rising from the ground, a cool breeze brushing lightly across the skin, soft daylight filtering through drifting clouds, and distant birds calling from the hills — these sensations came together as a gentle invitation to slow down and arrive fully in the moment.

On 10 March, UC students joined the Forest Therapy at Tsz Shan Monastery, organised by the College Student Wellness Programme — an experience that blended Buddhist wisdom with contemporary Western eco‑therapeutic practices.

The afternoon began with a guided tour of the monastery. A dedicated docent led students through its courtyards and halls, sharing the history, architectural design, and Buddhist symbolism embedded throughout the grounds. Walking beneath the misty sky, students experienced the serene atmosphere that characterises Tsz Shan Monastery.

Following the tour, the Forest Therapy session guided participants to connect with nature through slow walking, focused sensory observation, and simple reflective exercises. Students were encouraged to notice the subtle details around them: the texture of tree bark, the gentle sway of leaves, and the steady rhythm of their breath. One of the activities invited students to remove their shoes and step onto a patch of moss. Its cool, springy surface revealed a distinctly soft texture underfoot, offering a direct and grounding connection with the earth.

The afternoon concluded with students feeling grounded and refreshed, carrying with them a sense of calm and clarity cultivated in the peaceful embrace of Tsz Shan Monastery.
