Stepping into Mind Space: A Journey to Understanding Mental Health

“I felt disoriented and overwhelmed, as if my thoughts were scattered and voices kept intruding.”

This was how one participant described their feelings after experiencing the Symptom Experience Room at Castle Peak Hospital’s Mind Space – Mental Health Experience Museum, where they gain a sense what living with mental illness might feel like.

Organised by the College Student Wellness Programme, the visit on 24 November 2025 offered an immersive experience designed to help participants explore mental health through a different lens. Students began by exploring historical milestones through cultural relics, photographs, and oral histories, examining the intricate relationship between the brain and mental illness, as well as the evolution of recovery therapies. This provided valuable insight into how the understanding of mental health has progressed over time.

For many, the highlight was the Symptom Experience Room, which vividly simulated the sensory and cognitive challenges faced by individuals living with psychotic disorders. Complementing this was the Lived Library, where students engaged in heartfelt conversations with individuals who shared inspiring stories of resilience and recovery. Together, these experiences allowed participants to step into the shoes of those living with mental illness, fostering empathy and a deeper understanding.

The visit served as a powerful reminder that mental health matters – and that by keeping the conversation alive, we can build a more compassionate and supportive community for all.
