The Hop Wai Artist-in-Residence 2025-2026 – Professor Ross W F Yau
With the generous support of Hop Wai Tong, the College organised the second Hop Wai Artist-in-Residence Programme during March to April 2026. The College was honoured to appoint Professor Ross W F Yau as the Artist-in-Residence 2025–2026, bringing contemporary ink art experiences to students and staff.
Professor Yau is an Assistant Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University, specialising in ink art creation and research. His works have been exhibited internationally and are held in public and private collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Ashmolean Museum, and M+.
Ink Art Exhibition: ‘Variations in an Unadorned Space’
Guided by the concept of ‘Unadorned Space’, the exhibition constructs an aesthetic environment of purity and simplicity. With ‘Variations’ as its core proposition, it explores the multidimensional expressions of ink art within a contemporary context. The exhibition was on display on the Ground Floor of Wu Chung Library from 4 March to 24 April, and was open to University students and staff during library opening hours.
Professor Yau has also curated a companion publication, Variations in an Unadorned Space, which introduces the exhibition concept as well as the creative approaches and stylistic features of each work, providing a valuable record of the exhibition.
The opening ceremony was held on 4 March on the Ground Floor of Wu Chung Library.

Lecture: ‘Beyond the Plane: The Heterotopia of Ink Installation’
On 10 March, Professor Yau delivered a lecture at the College Assembly, sharing insights into the appreciation and creation of ink installation. The lecture explored the diverse forms of ink art in the contemporary context and offered students new perspectives beyond traditional formats.
Workshop: ‘A Glimpse of Gilded Haze: Among Breeze and Bamboo Shadows’
To enhance students’ understanding of ink art, the College invited Professor Yau to conduct an ink art workshop on 17 March, offering hands-on guidance on ink painting techniques.
Before the workshop, Professor Yau conducted a guided tour of the exhibition for participating students and took a group photo together with Professor Stephen H S Wong, College Head; Professor Lee Hung Kay, Associate College Head and Dean of General Education; Ms Dorothy K Y Chu, College Secretary; and the students.
