【2025 UCGOAL】In the Glow of Oxford: A Journey Through Language and Self

Drawn by the prestige of Oxford and a shared desire to improve their English, 16 UC students joined the College’s Summer Culture and English Language Programme at Hertford College, University of Oxford, UK, from 6 to 20 July. They embarked on a transformative journey, immersing themselves in experience, exchange, and exploration.
The journey began with a warm welcome tea in one of Hertford College’s historic dining halls. Dressed in their finest, the students gathered around long tables set with porcelain cups steaming with tea and silver spoons resting beside plates of freshly baked scones. Topped with clotted cream and sweet jam, each bite offered a taste of British tradition.

From that day forward, each moment unfolded with fresh perspectives. Lectures spanned centuries and disciplines, weaving together themes of fashion, architecture, politics, psychology, art, and entrepreneurship. One session stood out: a poetry class exploring John Donne’s The Flea. Though its language was archaic and its metaphors dense, thoughtful discussion revealed its brilliance. The programme was designed not only to inform but to inspire. Through seminars with expert tutors, immersive learning, and student-led presentations, participants sharpened their thinking and found their voices.
Like leaf veins running through the experience, Hertford’s Residential Advisors, Alyssa and Josh, brought warmth and enthusiasm that enriched each day beyond the classroom. With thoughtful care and creative energy, they curated a diverse array of cultural activities that filled the afternoons and evenings—punting on the River Cherwell beneath leafy branches and ancient bridges, game nights and karaoke, mini golf, and sixes. These shared moments not only deepened connections but also allowed students to savor the city’s charm in a relaxed, joyful atmosphere.

The study tour to London was truly magical. At the National Gallery, they stood in quiet awe before masterpieces like Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and da Vinci’s timeless works. Amid the hum of the city and the presence of world-renowned art, they felt the vibrant pulse of London.

A special note of thanks goes to Professor Martin C S Wong, Associate Colleg Head and Dean of Students, for accompanying our students. His commitment to student development and genuine care make this journey extra meaningful.
The programme concluded in a gala dinner. Likewise, dressed formally, they shared a local cuisine in the same storied hall. What had changed were their growth and friendship. They received certificates in a ceremony honoring their achievements, as well as the memories they had created.

Immersed in an authentic English-speaking environment, students gradually built confidence in expressing themselves. As one student reflected,
“To speak up, even imperfectly, is to learn.”
This spirit of growth and courage will continue to illuminate their journey ahead.
