Forever Remembering Dr Thomas H C Cheung

Our beloved Dr Thomas H C Cheung, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, United College, CUHK, passed away peacefully on 30 August 2023, at the age of 94. The College is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Cheung. Ms Lina H Y Yan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, United College and Professor Stephen H S Wong, Head of United College, led a group of UCians to attend Dr Cheung’s funeral on 11 and 12 October, expressing our deepest condolences to Dr Cheung’s family.

Dr Thomas H C Cheung served as a Trustee of United College since 1976 and held the position of Chairman from 2012 to 2018. Over the years, he generously donated to the College and the University, establishing scholarships, supporting medical research, organising student activities, and contributing to the improvement of sports facilities, benefiting countless students. Dr Cheung was also actively involved in alumni affairs, serving as the President of the United College Alumni Association from 1964 to 2008, a remarkable tenure of 44 years. After his retirement, he was elected as the Permanent Emeritus President of the Alumni Association, bridging the communication between alumni from different generations and the alma mater for half a century.

In memory of Dr Cheung, United College organised a Memorial Service for Dr Thomas H C Cheung on 3 November 2023, at Staff Common Room, United College. Professor Poon Wai Yin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor/Vice-President, CUHK, Ms Lina H Y Yan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, United College, and Professor Stephen H S Wong, Head of United College, delivered eulogies at the Memorial Service. Alumni Representatives, Mr Ho Man Sum, Mr Lee Kam Chung, and Professor Fung Kwok Pui shared their fond memories with Dr Cheung. Through eulogies, sharing, and video presentations, we paid tribute to Dr Cheung, thanking him for his deep concern for education in Hong Kong and his contributions to the college and the university. Dr Thomas H C Cheung will be forever cherished and remembered.
