Hong Kong will join this year’s Earth Hour “lights out” campaign at 8:30 pm, Saturday, 28 March 2020 to resolve the issue of global warming by action. United College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong will also support the Earth Hour Day and most of campus lightings will be turned off for that hour, including

– 1/F podium of Chan Chun Ha Hostel
– The signage of Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building

The Award was established with the generous donation from Mr Joseph W N Cheung, College Trustee, and is given out annually to a promising early career scholar of United College. The United College Early Career Research Excellence Award aims to promote research excellence and to recognise and honour outstanding academic staff members of United College at the outset of their independent research careers.
Application is now open until 6 May 2020. The results will be announced in August.

United College is now inviting volunteers from University full-time staff and full-time postgraduate students, who are interested in the promotion of experiential learning amongst students and the enrichment of hostel life, to serve as Resident Tutors for the academic year 2020-2021.
The third round application for International Conference Grant and Resident Fellow Schemes 2019-2020 is now open for submission. College Staff Member can send the completed application form, together with supporting documents to Secretary of the Committee on Cultural Interchange and Research, United College on or before 31 March 2020. After more than five years of concerted effort, United College will have its fifth student hostel in 2024! The new hostel will be a four-storey building located at the carpark next to Tsang Shiu Tim Building, providing 250 hostel places. The University and College have setup the Building Committee earlier, comprising of senior management from the University, College representatives, professors from the School of Architecture and UCSU representative. New hostel designer and architectural consultants have also been appointed.
The draft design of the new hostel is now ready, all students, staff and alumni are welcome to provide your feedback. To reduce the risk of spreading the novel coronavirus, the consultation forum was held in the format of Facebook Live at 4pm on 21 Feb 2020.

As the spread of the novel coronavirus has reached a critical stage, the University has elevated the Response Level against novel coronavirus to “Emergency”. All UC hostels will introduce the following arrangements with immediate effect:
1. The University has decided to extend the Lunar New Year holiday, classes will resume on 17 February 2020. Therefore, all students are encouraged to stay at home. Unless it is necessary, you should not return to the hostels to reduce the risk of infection.
2. Those who need to stay at hostels are required to comply with the following measures:
a. No visitors are allowed to enter hostel areas with immediate effect.
b. Residents are required to record their personal information and the time when they enter and leave the hostel, in order to let the warden keep track the condition of residents
c. All students who return to hostels are required to declare their travel history in the previous 14 days by filling in the Health Declaration Form (See below). They are also required to monitor their health status for 14 days by filling in the Self-medical Surveillance Form (See below). The forms should be submitted to their respective hostel wardens.
d. All residents should wear surgical mask at public area and wash their hands frequently.
e. Those who experience any illness, or get to know their roommate with illness symptoms, should contact warden and resident tutor immediately for necessary arrangement.
As the situation is critical at this moment, the College strongly advises all residents to stay at home, avoid contact with different people by reducing the risk of infection. All the above measures may cause inconvenience to residents but they are necessary and your health is always our primary concern. All of us are urged to take care of their personal health and look out for the well-being of those around us.

To encourage students to organise new or creative activities, the College has established the Creative Student Activity Award Programme and the aims of the Award are: (i) to increase the organisation of quality student activities on campus to benefit all College students; (ii) to foster the development of a positive attitude amongst student organisations; and (iii) to motivate students to participate in and support College life. The Programme for 2020 is now open for application. Students or student organisations registered with the United College Student Union are eligible to apply. During the Lunar New Year holidays, the student hostels of the College will be closed from 12:00 noon on 24 January to 12:00 noon on 29 January 2020. Non-local students who wish to stay on during the said period must notify their respective wardens in writing before 17 January 2020. No hostel services will be provided during this period.more
The UC Working Committee on Selection of Resident Students is now looking for a student helper to assist in the upcoming hostel selection exercises for regular-term residence, including design a computer programme and input application data. The remuneration includes HK$22,000 allowance plus free accommodation for the summer months of 2020.

UC Working Committee on Selection of Resident Studentsmore
The UC Working Committee on Selection of Resident Students would like to conduct an open consultation on revision of
hostel selection criteria for 2020-2021 and made the following amendments:
(a) UC Toastmasters Club is a student society managed by the College but not registered under UCSU. It is recommended to grant 10 scores to the President and 6 scores to other office-bearers.
(b) Student representatives in various College Committees nominated by UCSU will be revised as “Student representatives nominated by UCSU in various College Committees under Assembly of Fellows”.
(c) Regarding the new scheme of adding scores to helpers in UC Anniversary / UC Sing / UC Bun, it is recommended to reduce the maximum quota for each activity from 20 to 10.
(d) Non-local undergraduate applicants if failed to submit all required documents during the hostel application period, 20% of their hostel scores will be deducted.
United College students who have comments for the aforesaid amendments or the current hostel selection criteria should submit their suggestions to the College Dean of Students’ Office, wardens or members of the Working Committee on Selection of Resident Students in writing before 31 January 2020. A copy of the current hostel selection criteria is posted on the College website and notice boards for easy reference.

Non-local Internship or Research Scheme
This award scheme is open for application to those students who are going to join a short-term non-local internship or research programme (including field trips) of the respective teaching Department/Faculty during summer or winter breaks.
Supported by the College Endowment Fund, these studentships allow students to participate in short-term non-local study programmes and activities organized by the College, the University and other reputable outside organizations.
