Consultation on the Hostel Design of 5th UC Student Hostel

 

After more than five years of concerted effort, United College will have its fifth student hostel in 2024! The new hostel will be a four-storey building located at the carpark next to Tsang Shiu Tim Building, providing 250 hostel places. The University and College have setup the Building Committee earlier, comprising of senior management from the University, College representatives, professors from the School of Architecture and UCSU representative. New hostel designer and architectural consultants have also been appointed.

 

The draft design of the new hostel is now ready, all students, staff and alumni are welcome to provide your feedback. To reduce the risk of spreading the novel coronavirus, the consultation forum will be held in the format of Facebook Live, details are as follows:

CUHK announced that online teaching for Term 2 will begin on 17 February as scheduled. Relevant University units providing necessary services will resume limited on campus operations, beginning from 17 February, to support online teaching and provide related services. For other units, the special work-from-home arrangement will continue up to 23 February.

College Office and Dean of Students’ Office will not be opened during this period.

College Announcement on Student Hostels Disease Prevention, Health Declaration and Self-medical Surveillance

As the spread of the novel coronavirus has reached a critical stage, the University has elevated the Response Level against novel coronavirus to “Emergency”. All UC hostels will introduce the following arrangements with immediate effect:

1. The University has decided to extend the Lunar New Year holiday, classes will resume on 17 February 2020. Therefore, all students are encouraged to stay at home. Unless it is necessary, you should not return to the hostels to reduce the risk of infection.

2. Those who need to stay at hostels are required to comply with the following measures:
a. No visitors are allowed to enter hostel areas with immediate effect.
b. Residents are required to record their personal information and the time when they enter and leave the hostel, in order to let the warden keep track the condition of residents
c. All students who return to hostels are required to declare their travel history in the previous 14 days by filling in the Health Declaration Form (See below). They are also required to monitor their health status for 14 days by filling in the Self-medical Surveillance Form (See below). The forms should be submitted to their respective hostel wardens.
d. All residents should wear surgical mask at public area and wash their hands frequently.
e. Those who experience any illness, or get to know their roommate with illness symptoms, should contact warden and resident tutor immediately for necessary arrangement.

As the situation is critical at this moment, the College strongly advises all residents to stay at home, avoid contact with different people by reducing the risk of infection. All the above measures may cause inconvenience to residents but they are necessary and your health is always our primary concern. All of us are urged to take care of their personal health and look out for the well-being of those around us.

Creative Student Activity Award Programme Now Opens for Application

To encourage students to organise new or creative activities, the College has established the Creative Student Activity Award Programme and the aims of the Award are: (i) to increase the organisation of quality student activities on campus to benefit all College students; (ii) to foster the development of a positive attitude amongst student organisations; and (iii) to motivate students to participate in and support College life. The Programme for 2020 is now open for application. Students or student organisations registered with the United College Student Union are eligible to apply. Interested parties should submit the applications and activity proposals to the Dean of Students’ Office on or before Friday, 6 March 2020 by 5:00 pm. The winning student(s) or organisation(s) will be subsidised according to their programme proposals. Detailed activity and financial reports must be submitted to the College upon completion of the programme. This award programme is funded by the College Endowment Fund and T C Cheng Memorial Fund. The UC Working Committee on Selection of Resident Students is now looking for a student helper to assist in the upcoming hostel selection exercises for regular-term residence, including design a computer programme and input application data. The remuneration includes HK$22,000 allowance plus free accommodation for the summer months of 2020.

Open Consultation on Revision of Hostel Selection Criteria for 2020-2021

The UC Working Committee on Selection of Resident Students would like to conduct an open consultation on revision of

hostel selection criteria for 2020-2021 and made the following amendments:

(a) UC Toastmasters Club is a student society managed by the College but not registered under UCSU. It is recommended to grant 10 scores to the President and 6 scores to other office-bearers.

(b) Student representatives in various College Committees nominated by UCSU will be revised as “Student representatives nominated by UCSU in various College Committees under Assembly of Fellows”.

(c) Regarding the new scheme of adding scores to helpers in UC Anniversary / UC Sing / UC Bun, it is recommended to reduce the maximum quota for each activity from 20 to 10.

(d) Non-local undergraduate applicants if failed to submit all required documents during the hostel application period, 20% of their hostel scores will be deducted.

United College students who have comments for the aforesaid amendments or the current hostel selection criteria should submit their suggestions to the College Dean of Students’ Office, wardens or members of the Working Committee on Selection of Resident Students in writing before 31 January 2020. A copy of the current hostel selection criteria is posted on the College website and notice boards for easy reference.

Application for Alumnus To Cho-yee Award for Chinese Classical Art 2019-2020 (Student Activity Fund)

This award is established for subsidising student bodies to organise or participate in activities related to Chinese Classical Art, so as to broaden their exposure. Type of activities are applicable to Chinese literature and classical art, e.g. calligraphy, dancing, martial art, music, etc. United College registered student bodies are eligible to apply. Application must be submitted at least one month prior to the activity (regardless of whether the applicant has been successfully enrolled by then). Application deadline for the third round application is 30 Mar 2020. Result will be announced in mid to late April 2020. Applicants must submit the application form and required documents to the College Dean of Students’ Office in person on or before the deadline. Late applications will not be considered.
